My cat is a laptop lounger
Whenever I'm reading or working from home, my cat wants quality time with me. They've deleted paragraphs with their paws and sent emails before I'm ready—they literally get between me and my work.
What's my cat thinking?
- Jumping up to eye level to be close to you, obstructing your view, and interrupting your activity is attention seeking behavior. Your cat isn't being demanding, they're just politely reminding you that they need some interaction with you, whether that's a rub under the chin, snuggle time, or a hardcore play session.
This can sometimes escalate into vocal demands (meowing), pawing, or knocking things off your desk; if they're really frustrated, they might resort to biting. This doesn't mean they're a "bad" cat or you're a "bad" human, it might just be that you've been too engrossed in what you're doing to have considered socializing with them at the moment.
What should I do?
- In the moment:
- Harsh as it may sound, ignore your cat's charms in this moment and context. If you plan on getting any work done, don't succumb to their pity-kitty stare or persistent pawing for attention.
Check in with their needs—could they be lacking stimulation and exercise? Occupy them with a toy or a puzzle.
In the longer term:
- Aim for a compromise—let your cat stay in the room with you but don't allow them on you or the desk.
Set up a sanctuary beside you, with knockout appeal so your cat is happy to settle there. A raised shelf, windowsill, or cat tower—made cozy with one of their blankets or your old sweater or shirt—ensures they can see what you're up to. Mimic the laptop's screen and warmth with a window and a heat pad—few cats can resist either. Seal the deal with a few treats and a water station.
Why cats love tech?
- There's evidence that animal behavior is affected by electromagnetic fields that emanate from devices, while the heat output is a draw for cats seeking warmth from their surroundings. Also, the screen may offer an array of alluring noises, lights, and a moving cursor.
